Training for Competitive Bodybuilding (Physique), Bodyshaping (Figure)
or Fitness
The Categories
Physique. Judged by comparing shape, muscular definition,
separation and size, and overall symmetry.
The physique with the best overall symmetry combined with hard defined
muscle size will be favoured over a larger physique lacking definition.
The ability to display physique is important (this means posing).
Bodyshaping. For women who train but do not wish to
gain muscle size, become vascular or have the “cuts” required
for physique — competitors displaying these attributes are marked
down.
Competitors are judged on athleticism of figure and of body. Judges look
for bodies typifying health, low fat and tight toned muscle groups and
balanced body structure/symmetry. Femininity, elegance, poise, flow, style
and confidence are important in presentation.
The Training
Weight training regularly for 6-12 months minimum before entering a competition
depending on prior training, condition, weight etc.
Weight training approximately 4 times per week 45-60 minutes is optimal.
Cardio training after resistance or on rest days depending on body fat
levels, training stage etc.
The process at “1 to 1”
For body shaping/bodybuilding (competitive or own personal goals) an
initial fee of $130.00 for the first year will cover:
- an extensive training diary
- an assessment with a Personal Trainer and regular follow-ups.
- Nutritional guidance and advice
- Training programs
- Assistance with preparation for a competition (diet, posing, routines,
costumes, music etc)
Normal session fees then apply. The costs will depend on the length of
the workout sessions you choose, i.e. 45 minutes or full hour. You can
do your own cardio outside the studio if you wish.
Dedication
To build muscle you must be prepared to work hard and increase the amount
of weight you can lift.
You must be consistent and disciplined with training and with nutrition.
Nutrition
Proper nutrition is responsible for 60% of your success — the body
needs the right fuel to grow.
The 6-12 weeks prior to competition will involve reduction in body fat
and can be tough!
Other costs.
Apart from training costs you will need protein powder, supplements and
nearer to contest time you will need to purchase tanning products, costumes,
music preparation, and choreographer.
(Optional) and membership & entry fees to NZFBB. Have a look at www.nzfbb.org.nz.

After reaching 40 yrs of age, and as a regular at 1 to 1, I
found myself talked into having ago at Body building. This was a
unique experience for me and the support and encouragement from
the staff was fantastic.
I competed in the 2004 Wellington Championships and was successful
in winning the Novice figure grade.

The "one day I will train and do a body building competition"
finally came together after 18 months training at 1 to 1 Fitness
in Hastings. At the age of 44 "I DID IT"! and I came 3rd
in the Masters Women over 35 yr category.
I loved the journey and would thoroughly recommend it.

At 43 yrs of age I took up the challenge from Pauline at 1 to
1 in Hastings and had a go at Body Building. I never thought they
would get me up on stage but when you do the work and see the results
it was a true reward being up there.
I have competed 4 times for 3 3rd's and 1 2nd and made the top 5
at the New Zealand Nationals 2008.

Starting as a client at 1 to 1 Fitness in 1999, I graduated to
being a Personal Trainer and then at 39yrs of I competed in my first
competition October 2003, the first time was nerve-wracking to say
the least but a great experience which I learnt a awful lot from,
it took me right out of my comfort zone. This photo was
at the Wellington Champs 2005 at which I placed 1st in the Senior
Figure O/35yrs.

I was well into my 40's early in 2003 and was a client at 1 to
1 Fitness Studio. I was encouraged to train to take part in a Body
Shaping competition. So here I am, October 2003 at the Central North
Island Competition in Hamilton. The Team at 1 to 1 were so supportive
as I lacked a lot of confidence. I am really proud of myself for
getting up there and giving it a go.

I competed in the Novice womens over 52Kg Pysique section of
the Central North Island champs competition on 11th October 2003
in Hamilton.
At the time I was 29 years old.
It was such an awesome feeling being on that stage. A real adrenalin
rush. I've never had such a sense of achievement, and it was lots
of fun! 18 weeks of strict dieting and months and months of training
all paid off. I place second in my class.
I really enjoyed the training. The 1 to 1 team were really supportive,
as were the other ladies training for the competition at the same
time. The diet was tough but I was never hungry and actually felt
really good and healthy while on it. I did miss the odd glass of
wine though!
All in all a truly rewarding and worthwhile experience.
Cheers, Bec

2nd place NZFBB Wellington Novice Women 52-57kg. October 2005.
Entering 2 competitions was a challenging experience that formed
another chapter in my life journey. It is something that I will
always be pleased I did.

I was well into my forties when I discovered body building, a
little late for a sport that generally takes years of building muscle
to succeed. It was a huge surprise for me when I placed 2nd at the
NZFBB Nationals, under 52kg physique class. I love the physical
and mental challenge of this sport that also helps keep me in great
shape as I age. Thanks to 1 to 1.

After going to a 1 to 1 evening in 2007, seeing some of the girls
who were going to enter a Bodybuilding Competition I decided to
give it a go at 45 yrs of age. I had to lose a lot of weight but
with Pauline’s great help and encouragement I started. I lost
18.8kg from start to finish and I felt great, it was not to hard.
I am part of a great team who gave me heaps of support, help and
encouragement along with the trainers like Greg to keep me on the
straight and narrow with my workouts. I enjoyed it so much I am
entering again next year. Thanks 1 to 1 for a great experience.

After tipping the scales at 82 kg in 2001 I decided I needed
to change. I took up walking, then graduated to running, completing
the Napier 1⁄2 Marathon in 2002.
In 2005 I joined 1 to 1 Fitness Studio and soon it was suggested
to me that I consider joining the Body building team preparing for
a competition in Wellington.
Although unplaced I had caught the bug and after another 18 months
of training and at just 56kg I have recently (September 2007) placed
1st in the “Over 35yrs Figure class” at the North Island
Champs. This was followed by a further win at the 2008 Central North
Island and a top 5 placing at the NZ Nationals 2008
This has been a thoroughly challenging, enjoyable and rewarding
pursuit for me.

PRICELESS
Body Building - I have always found it interesting and
admired anyone who was dedicated and disciplined enough to train
and diet hard to achieve a great physic. (Naturally they
had great bodies to start with - right?).
When I was approached about giving it a go I thought I was being
teased (I'm so paranoid). It would be way out of my comfort
zone. "Me - show my knees?" "Me - on
stage in a bikini?!!" GET REAL!!!!!!
Eight months later, 12.5kgs lighter - I did just that.
Training sessions - a few $$
Protein powders - a few more $$
Tanning lotion, bikini, new hair style - a few extra $$$
For my new found confidence and self esteem - PRICELESS
I would not of done this without the help, dedication and support
from the team at 1 to 1 Fitness. Sheryn, Liz, Pauline, Sheryl
and Greg. THANK YOU
- Diane London, Napier.

1 To 1 Fitness has suited me well for 10 years - hard enough
to keep me fit and challenged, so I thought. Surrounded by some
great bodies training for body building comps, I was impressed with
their natural results and enthusiasm. So I tentatively asked if
body sculpting with a competition in mind might be possible for
me – ‘Absolutely, just remember you don’t have
a 35 year old body’. I had faith that underneath decades of
wear and tear there might still be a reasonable body. It’s
been a huge challenge – 12 months of commitment, pushing boundaries,
discipline and focus. And a learning curve about nutrition and metabolism.
Body builders eat well, trust me you don’t starve. Standing
on a stage in a wee bikini in 5” heels at 58 years old, toned
and tanned has been fabulous. Family and friends have been somewhat
gob smacked. I’m enjoying a revitalized body that’s
lighter and tighter and feel really well and proud of myself.
